The Southern Maryland Invitational Livestock Expo (SMILE) is organized as a tax exempt public body operating to provide an educational, fun and nurturing environment for area youth to showcase their skills and talents, foster camaraderie and enhance their knowledge and appreciation of Southern Maryland’s rich agricultural heritage, and provide outreach to the community in order to inform and increase awareness of the vibrant and diverse possibilities of farming and agricultural enterprises in Southern Maryland. SMILE operates primarily within the Southern Maryland region consisting of Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties and other counties by invitation.

GENERAL RULES
No child is permitted to stay overnight at the fairgrounds without individual’s parent staying – must be prearranged. It is the intent of this show for children to show their own animals. All exhibitors must be present on the fairgrounds during the show in order for the animal to be shown. Pre-arranged substitutions may be allowed by the superintendent. Proper attire must be worn during all shows. Optional Show shirt available for purchase or your own collar shirt, boots, and no soft shoes allowed in showring. Animals must arrive at time stated – NO LATE ARRIVALS. Exhibitors are not limited to numbers or animals. May only win 2 premiums per class. Full name ownership is required on all registration paperwork; no initials will be accepted. No animals released until conclusion of show on Sunday, June 28. Stalls must be cleaned and checked by superintendent before leaving. Age of Participants – 8yrs by 1 Jan 09 – 21 yrs as of 1 Jan 09 Food available for purchase on premises. A copy of all registration papers must accompany all entry forms. Forms available on www.SMILE-Inc.org Pens must be cleaned daily by 8:00 am and rebedded.

1. Entries will be received as stated on cover sheet.
a. Pre-entry is required. Entries are due by June 6, 2009.
b. Steers will be shown by breed as long as there is competition. Classes will be Angus, Shorthorn, Hereford, Crossbred and and all other registered breeds. All animals will be weighed and divided into classes at the superintendent’s discretion. Number of classes may vary. Re-weigh will NOT be permitted. Steers must be born after January 1, 2008.
c. For heifers, indicate breed, date of birth, registration number, sire and dam on entry form. Heifers must be 6 months old and weaned.
d. Breeding cattle registration will be checked at steer weigh in.
e. Steers and heifers must be dehorned and healed. For safety reasons, entries for animals not meeting these criteria will not be accepted.
f. Commercial heifers are unrecorded crossbreds.

2. Ownership: All steers must be the bona fide property of the exhibitor by Jan 1 of the current year.
a. Breeding heifers must be the bona fide property of the exhibitor and must be solely owned and registered in the name of the exhibitor only by June 1 of the current year.
b. Ear tattoos must be legible and conform to the BREED ASSOCIATION REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE. Exhibitors must clean the animal’s ears prior to check in. Wet ink will be disqualified.

3. Ownership:
a. All Breeding sheep must be the bona fide property of the exhibitor and must be owned and registered with the Breed Association in the full name of the exhibitor only by June 1 of the current year. Initials are not acceptable. Registration papers and ear identification of animals will be checked by the Superintendent. No joint ownership will be allowed.
4. All sheep must be properly presented for show. Market lambs must be slick shorn.
5. No artificial coloring may be used on any part of any animal regardless of class.
6. Teeth requirements: Spring lambs – All lamb teeth must be present. Fall lambs – Yearling teeth may be present but must not be up even with the lamb teeth at time of show. Yearling – sheep may not have more than 4 permanent teeth showing at time of show.
7. All sheep must have official scrapies ID. Per USDA regulations, a registration tattoo will suffice if the sheep is accompanied by its registration paper or a completed application for registry. Wet ink will be disqualified.
8. Market lambs must be born on January 1, 2009 or after.
9. Classes will be Suffolk, Hampshire, Southdown, Wool breeds, Crossbred, all other registered breed.
10. All slickshorn sheep must be shorn before arrival. NO SHEERING ON FAIRGROUNDS. HAND CLIPPING ONLY IS ALLOWED.

Commercial breeding animals must be tagged with a personal identification ear tag.
4. Hog classifications: Duroc, Hampshire, Poland China, Yorkshire and all other register breed. All breeds of domestic swine that are bred for commercial food production are eligible to show. All breeding swine must be purebreds, with pedigrees and ownership verified by registration papers issued by a bona fide breed registry.
5. Gilts may be entered in market hog classes but any gilt entered in breeding classes is not eligible for market hog classes.
6. All breeds and crossbreeds will show together in market classes and fitting and showmanship classes.
7. Water and white talcum powder are the ONLY substances that may be placed on the skin of a swine to enhance show ring appearance (this rule applies to all swine). Any evidence of hair removal, clipping or shaving of hair on hogs (Market and fitting and showmanship) besides ears, tails and underline is prohibited.
8. Feeder hog must be born January 1, 2009 or after.

MEAT GOAT SECTION:

Rules for Meat Goats:
|
|
1. Meat goats will be allowed to carry horns, but must have them tipped blunt. Blunting (also called tipping) simply means removing the pointy tip of the horn. This can be done with a pair of hoof trimmers. Only a small amount of horn should be removed to prevent bleeding. For the safety of the exhibitors, sharp horns will not be allowed. The debudding of market goats is encouraged, but not required.
2. Meat goats may be shown with a collar.
3. All meat goats must have official scrapie ID. Per USDA regulations, a registration tattoo will suffice if the goat is accompanied by its registration paper or a completed application for registry. Wet ink will be disqualified.
4. Market goats must be born on January 1, 2009 or after.
5. Market goats should have 3/8” of hair or less.
6. Any meat goat without proper registration papers will be moved to commercial class.
7. There will be 3 classes: Fullblood 94% and above with papers, Percentage 50% - 93% with papers and Commercial no papers.

In addition to general rules for all Livestock the following will be observed by those exhibiting dairy cattle at SMILE:
The Purebred Dairy Cattle Association Show Ring Code of Ethics revised in 2004 will be followed. A complete copy can be found at:

The following practices or procedures are considered unacceptable and defined as being: “False, Deceptive and Unacceptable Practices” in the showing of registered dairy cattle:
|
|
1. Misrepresenting the age and/or milk status for the class in which it is shown.
2. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally, with an irritant or counter-irritant, or other substance to artificially improve the conformation; plugging of teat canal with foreign substances.
3. Surgery or insertion of foreign material under the skin, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body though not to preclude practices required or involved in normal management.
4. Criticizing or interfering with the judge, show management or other exhibitors while in the show ring, or other conduct detrimental to the breed or the show. The decision of the judge is final at the time of the show.
5. Challenging, threatening or interfering wth an ethics committee appointed by show management to monitor the animals on exhibit on the show grounds.
6. Excessive manipulation of hair. The maximum allowable length of naturally growing hair anywhere on the topline is not to exceed 1”.
7. Addition of foreign objects, including, but not limited to hair or hair substitutes, cloth or fiber, to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body is prohibited.
8. Recognize good herdsmanship and exhibits in the barn. In keeping with the basic philosophy of the PDCA, ethics are an individual responsibility of the owner of each animal shown.

1. Number of exhibits: Exhibitors may show only 1 animal per breed in Class 29 - 35 Exhibitors may show 2 animals per breed in Class 36 - 38
2. Registration papers and Lease agreements will be checked.
3. Fitting and Showmanship will be judged first followed immediately by breed conformation/type classes.
4. Breed will alternate during individual classes
5. Dress code: white on white – neckpiece optional
6. Classes may be combined at the discretion of the superintendent.
